| Well assisting is when you need to borrow someone else's skills you can borrow them for as long as they leave their assisting screen open. Basically you can borrow most non combat skills and the other person will get all the exp for anything you do with their skills.
For example if you wanted to make a prayer potion and had all the ingredients, just not the level, you could request assistance from a person with high herblore, and they would get the exp, you would get the potion
You can't request assistance in minning and woodcutting I believe, not sure on others
