| China's One Child Policy Background Information:
Before the one child policy was settled, families in China used to have up to 10 children because they believed that more children would mean greater prosperity, not to mention extra hands to help out around the house or in the fields.
However, the population of China increased rapidly because of this mentality and the Chinese realized that if their population were to rise above roughly 1.3 billion people, their resources would become exhausted and famine would occur. That is the reason why the one child policy was adapted in 1979. One of the disadvantages is that there will be an imbalance in genders. Most couples favour boys more than girls. When they have a girl, the parents would sometimes engage in an act of infanticide where they murder their own child or they do not report the birth of the baby girl. An official estimate says that, by 2020, there may be 30 million men of marriageable age who will not be able to find a wife since the girls are outnumbered. One of the advantages is that with a controlled population, China’s welfare is not at risk anymore.
There was a high unemployment rate before because of overpopulation, but after the one child policy was enforced, there was less competition for jobs. Do you agree with China's one child policy? Does the government have the right to govern the number of children a family can have? |
