You would know that the Vatican believed the world was flat and that the sun/solar system revolved around the earth. Galileo detested through scientific fact that this was indeed wrong. This undermined the Vatican's teachings and they saw science as heresy and Galileo as a heretic. They persecuted him for over 350 something odd years. Which made the movement for theoretical scientists/mathematicians/etc to form The Illuminati.
