New build in the works. I've never had a problem with onboard sound, so my question is how significant is the difference between onboard and an actual card?

What is it mostly for? gaming or media?

You'd need proper hardware to fully reap the benefits of good sound card so make sure you got that checked.

If you're into music movies and games, you should be a sound card to maximize the entertainment. Oh, get nice speakers too. =]

Sound cards aren't too expensive. You can easily get a good for for under what? $70-100.
