USB bootup?

Would it be possible to boot up an Operating System, be it a Linux LiveCD or just a copy of WinXP, from an external flash drive or perhaps an external harddrive? I'm assuming that it'd be possible to do it after it's been installed on the device, but I need to know if there's a way of getting the ISO to run, which seems very doubtful.

I know you can with Mac, just because I have a Mac. Make sure you have your usb mounted and when you install the OS from the CD, select to install to the USB drive (partition or whatever) and you have a portable OS. I only know it works with Mac, not sure about those other two.

As long as your computer supports it.

You should be able to do it from an external hard drive as well, I'm not sure if you would have to set it to master or not, but my boyfriend's mother does it all the time when she gets sick of Windows.
