Illumination
The water cascades behind me
Creating a rhythm for my thoughts
As voices in the distance interrupt them.
Shining intensely, the sun illuminates many mysteries,
But my eyes remain closed to them.
What is it that blocks my view?
Thoughts clouded by images of mountains;
By dreams of great heights,
While I'm stuck on this lowly rock.

The voices move closer; the people with them-
Searching for a rock of their own,
But aiming much smaller,
And as my eyes begin to open,
I see every shadow created by every overlooked stone
And the ripples created by each.
I think to myself, "Maybe I'm aiming too high,"
As I lay back down, enjoying the sun.



Sigh, there's a reason I don't usually write freeverse. Regardless, C&C appreciated. Here's a sort of "matching" haiku I wrote that day also:



Basking in the sun
Wishing to climb greater heights-
The mountain ahead.
