Any advice for starting a brand new story?

A Random completely whimsical sentence.
Like say:
The birds flew around the trees, wondering where they should make their nest as a young girl sat and watched them from the grass.
And go from there.
Or start wth somethign that will just grab you. Example:
The sound of the bone snapping within it's cocoon of flesh was almost sickening to everyone who heard it.
Did that help? Or did I Sound way to stuck up and like a know-it-all? >> I didn't mean to come off as such, so if I did I'm sorry.

I used to do that with a small pad of paper because I get so many ideas while out walking around, lol.
Thanks Ankh | |

It's far easier to write down the story of something that already exists in your head; I'll write character biographies, pre-story histories, define terms, name people and places, etc. before even starting the actual writing. I also have an ending in mind before I start, so that I can always stay focused on where I'm going.

If you have an idea, it shouldn't be too hard to start it off, and if you need a bit of help on that, you'll get plenty of advice here. If you just want to write something, but have no idea what, I suggest you just start writing. Go with something like, "The man was getting closer and closer by the second," or "So there we were, sitting by the broken down car." More often than not, a simple sentence like that will develop into a story, or at least how the characters got where they are.
Another thing you may want to try is just write about a past experience, and because it happened to you, you'll already know the story behind it, so all you have to do is tweak it up a bit. Say you have a scar on your nose, tell the story how you got it with a few extra details and possibly characters. When you're done with that, think what would happen next if it was a movie that you were watching for the very first time.
Hope that's any help. | |
