Personally, since I never read, if it's a book, I consider it literature. I don't care what kind of book it is.
Erotica, Popup, Picture, even Journal.
If it's got pages to flip with something on them, It's a book.
((Of course, that's just my opinion)) |
If you've never heard of them, you should really check them out. Radically different styles, but they're still my favorite three authors.
Palahniuk tends to write really bold, edgy stuff. His writing style is really conversational and understandable, but still has some cool figurative shifts that he works into it to keep the reader entertained.
Kerouac is way different. He's actually my favorite author, though the other two are close seconds. He was the most famous author of the Beat Generation, and wrote really spontaneously. He didn't like to check or edit his stuff; his philosophy was, "First thought, best thought." He loved using long sentences (some that ran whole paragraphs). He also wrote a ton of his stuff while high, which adds another whole level for people like me. xD
Vonnegut is quite similar stylistically to Palahniuk, but slightly more traditional. While Palahniuk's style is almost conversational, Vonnegut goes for the same realisim and minimalism as Palahniuk, but with more traditional distance between reader and character. He was the king of awesome sciencefiction, though. If you like that sort of stuff, read Cat's Cradle. Really awesome stuff.
But yeah, most of the people who I've met who are really good writers and informed, intelligent human beings read at least one of those, if not more. So check it out.
