Poet of the Weeks #2

Ok this time this is going to go for around 2 weeks. Sorry for the late posting I was in Florida

This weeks theme is an event in history.

You can write any type of poem on anything in History, for example I would enter something on the Holocaust.

I knew a man named Mussolini
He had a tiny weenie
I wished to tell him it was a fact
But did not know how he'd react
So we discussed it over a plate of linguine.

I tried to keep his feelings spared
But not that he at all cared
He went to try to prove he was not a sissy kitten
So in 1940 he attacked France, East Africa and Britain
That day on June 10th, war was declared.

Made it up on the spot.

My story is everyone's story to tell
Every day my heart is caught in my throat
Stuck in a perpetual hell
The concentration camp is surrounded by a moat.

There are days when I don't want to exist
The depression and hopelessness painted all over my face
Staring blankly at the numbers on my wrist
I'm being worked like the slowest horse in the race

This isn't what I want
Standing here with a meager portion of rice
The ones with Swastikas, the masters of the art of taunt
Their guns are loaded so I don't think twice

But I need to get out
I still have enough of a voice to shout
And I will, I'll shout and scream
And I will voice my dream.

Because one day I'll get out.

While I do not plan to enter, since I am judging, I wrote on example of a NON-freeverse poem. I wrote this up in about twenty minutes just now in econ class. It's a sonnet in iambic pentameter about glacial flooding at the end of the last Ice Age.

A pulse, a wave, a crash and icy flood
The walls of skyward blue do now crumble
As glass-like shards do fall and rumble
To drown, torrential floods, innocent blood
For years hollowed the glaciers without bud
Their massive size caused mighty kinds to humble
But in short weeks made mighty cities tumble
Their monoliths fells with a resounding thud
So gone forever the geniuses of old
Religion, culture, life buried in wake
And too gone are those kings so bold
Their will is smashed, their throne did break
For whose should gaze on nature with a stare so cold
Will see their lives end 'neath the frigid lake
