GPoints: 17,538 Rep Power: 21 | SOTW #1 Welcome to the first Sentence of the Week contest!
The goal of this contest is to craft the best possible sentence from the prompt provided. Good sentences will be judged via the following criteria: - Is the sentence informative?
- Is it descriptive?
- Is it creative?
- How many different tidbits of information has the author fit into a single sentence?
- Is it grammatically correct?
- How long is it?
Thus, the best sentences will probably be cumulative sentences - long, with lots of modifying clauses that provide additional details. Artistry and creative language is especially important - metaphors are your best friend for winning this. Winners will have their named placed in the Hall of Fame.
So, a quick example. If the prompt is, "They sat down at the table...", I would write my sentence as: Quote: |
They sat down at the table, he grabbing the stack of papers and sorting through them absently, his eyes glazed with distant thoughts, his thoughts plagued by troubled half-truths spoken the night before, she taking a tentative sip of her coffee as she set up her laptop, her mind oblivious to her coworker’s woes, her own thoughts focused solely on finding some brilliant way to convince a jury that her client was innocent, the table strewn with affidavits and newspaper clippings to be used as evidence in the upcoming trial, its faux wood surface hidden beneath the hulking mounds of paperwork and imposing stacks of legal motions, its legs buckling like a marathon runner wearing a seventy pound backpack, the overall scene suggesting just how little the employees of that legal firm knew or cared to know about each other’s lives, content to simply go on living from day-to-day without a care for each other’s happiness, too concerned with their own thoughts of yearly bonuses and lovers’ spats to even realize each other’s troubles.
| So, without further ado, here is the first prompt for Sentence of the Week: Prompt 1:

GPoints: 9,647 Rep Power: 15 | She got into the car hastily, lifting the skirt of her champagne- colored prom gown slightly as to not step on the intricate lacing with her four-inch stiletto heels, holding tightly onto the frame of the rental car with one hand and to the palm of her soon to be lover with her other, slipping, nevertheless, on the frozen brown mud beneath her delicate feet, and finding herself caught between the rough upholstery of the seat and and the handsome gentleman dressed in his full tuxedo complete with bow tie and matching champagne cummerbund, feeling his strong, lean body atop hers, and collapsing gently beneath his weight as he closed the door.
This just felt like a run-on.

GPoints: 1,006 Rep Power: 5 | She got into the car with ease, gracefully, with an air of utmost confidence, her slender and lithe frame seeming to float in the cool and fragrant evening air, her actions flowing, like honey, neither jerky nor unsteady as she settled in the limousine, the distinctive smell of the tan leather seats in the air as well as the unique musky scent of her perfume, and turned to face the man beside her, noting the way that the moonlight reflected the fine lines of his cheekbone and jaw, emphasising his beautifully chiselled face, from which radiated a demeanor of indifference, cool confidence, almost insolence, completed by his close-cropped peroxide hair, which was in stark contrast when paired with his intense grey eyes that danced with a blazing inner fire, and like beams of sunlight, their focus on her warmed her to the core, like molten lava flowing within every inch of her ethereal body.
