GPoints: 139 Rep Power: 14 | SOTW #2 Welcome to the second Sentence of the Week contest!
The goal of this contest is to craft the best possible sentence from the prompt provided. Good sentences will be judged via the following criteria: - Is the sentence informative?
- Is it descriptive?
- Is it creative?
- How many different tidbits of information has the author fit into a single sentence?
- Is it grammatically correct?
- How long is it?
Thus, the best sentences will probably be cumulative sentences - long, with lots of modifying clauses that provide additional details. Artistry and creative language is especially important - metaphors are your best friend for winning this. Winners will have their named placed in the Hall of Fame.
This week's prompt is as follows: Prompt #2 Quote: |
Start your sentence with the name of your character. Describe this character sitting on a swing, and provide any other details you think are relevant to the setting (emotional state, etc.).
|
This contests starts today (October 6th) and ends on October 13th.

GPoints: 382 Rep Power: 1 | Bernadette sat on the black leather seat of the too low swing, enjoying the feeling of the fine, golden sand as it shifted and flowed between her toes at every tiny movement of her feet, and the feel of the hot sun on her already too red shoulders, her eyes unfocused and blank, staring into the distance at the deep, blue water of the ocean as it thundered against the jagged rocks sending white geysers into the air, her hair billowing around her face in the slight breeze, which filled her nose with the faint smell of salt and sunscreen.

GPoints: 20 Rep Power: 1 | Oliver was panting slightly - the climb from his wheelchair to the swing was unbelievably draining on his 8-year-old body, even with his sister's help - but he persevered with admirable determination, because today, with his sister positioned at Oliver's back, he got to be the flying man.

GPoints: 3,429 Rep Power: 7 | Morgan sat on the swing, leaning against the frayed ropes, a rolled up paper clutched in her hand, under the cool, refreshing shade of the ancient willow tree--but her mind was distant, recalling the chain of events that had just recently passed, where death was as close as the bowed branches that enclosed her in this small sanctuary, cutting her off from the world, leaving her with those thoughts, too many thoughts swirling in her mind, a tornado of conflict and confusion that she felt she could meditate on forever, but her thought process was cut short as the curtain of branches parted, the figure back lit by the harsh sunlight of sundown.

GPoints: 1,165 Rep Power: 3 | Nina raked her bare toes along the cool, silky sand of the long-abandoned playground as the crisp breeze gently nudged the worn swing she’d nestled into, her frail, bony fingers clutching the rusty chains that squawked like a baby pterodactyl calling out amidst the cavernous emptiness of the night: a soothing lullaby to her soul, compared to the perpetual roars of rampant brutality which quaked her home – a grimy trench she truly believed she could clamber out of by floating on the waves of the wind, drifting closer toward the radiant sea of stars, until the tide of clouds rolled in.

GPoints: 368 Rep Power: 1 | Scarlett slowly lowered herself into the swing, listening idly as the plastic made a curious squeak as it conformed to her rump, making the chains that had given her lithe, pale hands a place to rest rattle and jingle like the many, many thoughts bouncing around inside her head, all of which seemed to be placing themselves on her furrowed brow, like a wandering river of complicated thinkings digging rivulets into her normally pristine features; it was as though she couldn't feel those thoughts also creating a path for her her tears down the cheeks that had a hint of redness due to the crisp autumn breeze, and those tears creating an adhesive for those stray locks of dark mane that now stuck to her cheek, plastered there by the breeze, surrounding her confused eyes that stared in front of her with a pondering, innocent look of utmost, forlorn curiosity of why this place that had always felt like home before, now felt barren and empty, like the naked trees which had sheltered her in the summertime, just like he had.

GPoints: 306 Rep Power: 4 | David was perched almost lifelessly, a pendulum swaying in the darkness, on the worn tire swing-its edges frayed and coarse, the color had bleached to a dull gray, the rope looking as if it could snap at any moment- taking no notice of the danger that could befall him if the swing were to tumble onto the glistening rocks below, dangerously beautiful, sharpened only in the way nature could, entranced by his own thoughts, or lack of thoughts, as a tangerine sun began to rise simultaneously far off in the distance and only inches away from his stiffened, white fingertips, the brilliant lights dancing haphazardly across the murky water casting an eerie glow on the surrounding willows, draped lazily into the liquid, while the clouds floated effortlessly in the sky, and he realized he had been sharing this frigid night with with many creatures from the graceful owls to the frightened mice and the pesky, buzzing mosquitoes, full of his own, rich blood, brooding on his problems until he could ruminate no more, but just maybe it was worth it to see this breathtaking gift and forget his troubles for even mere moments, he thought, as he cautiously descended the old rubber, taking care not to land his bare feet on the shards below; it was time to go home.
