New to CS? Lookie here.

I did not write this either. Credits to Tee of GC~

So you've just got the game, steams updated it, you played a few games and you simply find that you cannot get a great score against other people. Simply because they have been playing a lot longer than you. It is definetly annoying to constantly die, sometimes without firing off a simgle shot. But everyone has been there, even the best in the world were at some point n00bs (New, unskilled people to the game).

Learn the map

Where do we start, first of all, look at the map and learn the layout. This is vitally important you do not want to be lost and not know where to go. Learning the layout comes with playing the map, most maps are very small and it doesn't take long for anyone to pick up where the rough routes are. Remember the location of the objectives such as bomb sites, hostages, rescue points and the spawn areas. This is quite simple to do whilst dead waiting for the next round to begin.

Learn the objectivs

So now you know your way around the map, next you need to understand the objective, if the maps prefix is de_ such as de_dust or de_cbble, the objective for the Terrorist team is to plant the bomb and detonate it, whilst the Counter-Terrorist's objective is to prevent the bomb being planted and if it is planted, to defuse it. On a hostage map (with the prefix cs_) the objective for the Terrorist team is to prevent the rescuing of the hostages and for the Counter-Terrorist team, its to save them. Both teams can also win the round by eliminating the other completly.

Be aware of your surroundings

So now we know the map and its objectives, time to get in the game. When playing the game, try to keep an eye on whats happening, incase the bomb gets planted and the number of people left on both teams. This is again a challenge to do, but again comes with practice. If you know the current state of the field you should hopefully know where to go and what to expect, for example if the bomb has been planted and there are two people on the other team, it is very likly that both will be inside the bombsite defending the bomb.

"Stick together team"

A vitally important line to remember, being new to the game, if you find someone more experienced than you, chances are your going to die as they will be able to aim and fire faster than you. Try sticking together with someone who is doing very well on your team, that player will generally be doing the right things, such as doing the objective and knowing when to push. You will be able to work together by shooting at the same target and that will bring it down faster. You are also less vunerable to be caught out in the wrong place at the wrong time. By staying alive more and shooting at more targets you should find your skill does improve and as you hopefully don't die all the time you get to play more.

Don't be afraid to pitch a tent

In other words, camping. Some people despise this and will complain about it, ignore them. Camping is a vital part of the game in defending objectives and staying alive. It is also a lot easier to shoot from a stationary or crouched position by looking towards the way the enemy will probably come in. For example take a look at this position on de_dust2, it covers the tunnels leading into the bombsite, but it also provides cover from other angles. (Screenshot C) Please camp if you are doing it at the objective, such as the bombsite if you are Counter-Terrorist (CT) or the hostages if you are on the Terrorist (T) team. Don't camp if there is no reason to. Simply camping a T spawn on a de_ map isn't going to teach you anything excpept how to avoid the action.

Retreat? We're just advancing in another direction!!!

In this game, retreat is indeed a viable option. If you confront too many enemies, or the pro on the other team, fall back. There is no harm in this, its smart to play the odds, since you will stay alive longer and you will learn from it. A good example is trying to attack one bombsite, watching your surroundings and relaise the other site is clear, then by falling back you can get to the other site, plant the bomb and be well on your way to victory.

Teamplay

CS is not Unreal Tournament, it is not an "everyman for himself" game, it is a team game. Use your team, stay with them and help them to complete the objective, you will be much popular if you do. Don't sacrifice your own team to try and get a better score, work together and get that bomb planted or rescue those hostages or use your supirior numbers to over run a bomb site. Sometimes you will find that someone on your team will want to try and get people to work together by ordering everyone to attack the same bobmsite or telling everyone where the bomb has been planted. Follow these orders, it will inspire others to do so and will even help you with learning some tactics.

It isn't vital to be a good teamplayer, you can let others go in first then you follow, allowing them to take the brunt of the other teams attack, there is nothing wrong with this. However if someone orders a rush on a bombsite, do so, just keep running untill you reach the site, sometimes you won't make it sometimes you will, stick with your teamamtes and this will be more successful.

Get to grips with guns

In CS there are around 20 odd guns, each with the positives and negatives, try using each gun in different circumstances, just cos that MP5 was useless at defending the bomb site, it may not be useless when rushing. There isn;t any need to learn the prices and fireing rates of each gun, just use wat gun you like to use when you have the money to buy it. Chances are your faveroute gun will be one you can kill easily with. Just remember when firing, stop, aim and use short bursts.

The guns in the game are very inaccurate when moving and firing over a long distance. Stop when you see an enemy, the gun will be more accurate, aim for the chest or stomach and then firs using short bursts of 3-4 shots. The length of the burst will depend on how close you are to the enemy, at long range you may only want to fire one or two shots at a time. At point blanc though your going to want to let it rip, do so, pretty much everygun will hit if you are right next to someone.

Learning how to use the guns is the most vital part of the game, being able to pick a head off at range with a pistol takes a lot of time and practice. Just keep at it.

Don't be afraid to walk away

If you are in a server with far too many good people, walk away. There are over 10,000 public servers at any given time for you to choose from and there are always people like you who are new to the game. This is useful if you find hackers (cheaters) are playing in the server, you don't want anything to do with them so simply walk away.

Be polite

Yes I know I may sound liek you mother, but do please be polite to others on the server. Say 'hello' or 'lo' when you join the game, 'bb' when you leave, don't agrivate people by calling them names and if they try to agrivate you, ignore them. Find one really well moderated server and play it constantly, get to know the people who play and in return they may give some free advice and tactics, this has happened to me many times. There are other people in the world sitting infront of a computer like you and have feelings just like you.

Watch and learn

Do exactly as it said in the subtitle, when you do die watch the people with the good scores, they will give clues away to how to play better, watch their tactics and don't be afraid to copy them, some of my faverote tactics have come from watching other people play.

Get out there!!!

My final piece of advice is to simply play, reading articles like this will not get you anywhere any time soon. The only way to improve is to play, try new tactics, experiment with that gun, try rushing that way and see what happens. Unlike real life, there is always the next round.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this article and I do hope you have learned something from it. Granted there are many other guides like this out there and I do not discourage you from finding them and reading them. Many people will have different opinions and by having a variety of ideas, you can impliment the best ones and get better at the game.
