For Staff:
What will be defined as a successful thread now that guides are basically UG only? For Members:
What should be defined as a successful thread now that guides are basically UG only?

I've been looking through UG apps and I think there are some criteria:
-The Threads should have been recent
-The Threads should be either helpful or sparking a diskussion
"Since when do you play Neopets?" is not really a sucessful thread since everyone just posts one sentence and that's it, it becomes successful when there is a debate.. The Abortion Thread
There has been a bit of a debate in here for instance, still the Thread creator can't take full credit of that...
What I'd love to see is that people just start linking posts where they have been helpful/paritipated in a debate...
There is no sense in generating a 10 pages long spam thread...
A sucessful thread is a thread where you have helped one other person, discussed something in depth in my opinion...

And yeah, personally when I'm looking at an application, I'm not going to accept someones guide they made last year. Where have they been since then? We want active members in underground. So I'd like to see something that was made at least semi-recently to show that they deserve UG NOW. Not last year.
And I think "Successful thread" does need to be defined in the guideline for making an application....But, I think it's something that actually contributes to the activity of gaming gutter. A thread that promotes new members to spam, is not successful IMO. One that is asked in such a way that people have to actually think about their response, or a thread that people are genuinely interested in talking on, is a little better. "What do you like better" threads are crap as far as I'm concerned, they promote absolutely no discussion, and when I see people use threads like that, I say no. I think it also depends on how much they put into their own first post. Did they actually answer their own question, or did they just go "hey wutchu think about obama"? Obama can make for a good discussion, but if the topic maker didn't even try, then I'd say no.
As far as guides go, it has to be something we all didn't know already, something people might actually find helpful, and something that wasn't ripped. For example, if that "How to search a page using ctrl+F!" 'guide' was ever used for a successful thread..I would say no. Because it wasn't even a guide. It was a reminder, if anything, that ctrl+f brings up a search bar.
There are many guides that can be written off of experience that have nothing to do with hacking and cheating.
For example, most of the guides I've written....Are simply things I've come across on the internet that I think is really cool. Like how Club Live (Now "Bing") gives away free gifts mailed to your house, simply for playing games....Or the list organizing guide I made, I happened to find an awesome list-organizer on google, it helped me out, so I shared it and made a guide out of it. Personas for firefox....I thought that was an amazingly simple way to change the skin of firefox without slowing it down or anything, so I made a guide out of that.
If people have little web-secrets that they find extremely helpful for themselves, they can easily turn it into a guide that will share that information and help out others. I think the problem with most guides today, and the reason alot of them suck so bad, is because people are only making them with the sole purpose of getting underground, therefor they're small crappy guides that could easily be googled, and the user isn't genuinely interested in helping out anyone, that's ALL they want is underground. I look for people who don't have "Leecher" written all over themselves. So if they spammed to 250 posts, and made 2 game guides like "HOW TO PLAY SOLITAIRE" or something crappy like that.....Good chance they're not going to make it in. Just because you meet all the requirements, does not mean you're underground material.
Ok I think I started rambling....LOL. | |

GPoints: 16,156 Rep Power: 10 | No. That wasn't rambling; it was helpful.
That's exactly what I was looking for. I kept thinking that new users would fail at getting UG now that we have the new rules.
I see what's going on now. Thank you, Morris.

GPoints: 16,156 Rep Power: 10 | I'll go ahead and close it. I only asked that so we would have something to go on in the event that the staff weren't sure what to go by now.
