I -rep offensive remarks, usually only 1 or 2 points, because it shows the character of the person making the remarks. They are usually not severe enough to warrant a report for flaming, but offensive remarks are bad enough. Are these comments considered 'against the rules'? When I first joined last summer, the rules on -repping included remarks like that, and I hadn't seen anything warranting otherwise.
Also, is somebody is making an ass of themselves on a thread, such as this comment: Quote:

This news post made by Nom honestly only made it a little more confusing on what constitutes rep abuse, since I put a legitimate reason on just about all the rep I give
Here's the example I'm referring to later in the thread about rep retaliation:

GPoints: 72,830 Rep Power: 22 | Well in my own opinion I don't see a problem with -repping someone for the reason in the original post. It was kind of rude, and if you feel that he deserved it then by all means.. But either way, wait for someone who's more familiar with the rep rules.

GPoints: 17,141 Rep Power: 19 | I have a question about rep, and I think it now fits this thread perfectly, so im not going to bother making my own thread.
If you -rep someone for something reasonable, then they go and -rep you for something stupid in retaliation, can we report that and they get infracted?

GPoints: 1,489 Rep Power: 15 | Actually, I could ask the same thing, I'm glad you asked. When I -repped Cody! He -repped in retaliation, and later +repped to cancel it out. Isn't that technically rep abuse, since neither had good reason for the rep?

GPoints: 17,141 Rep Power: 19 | Yeah, it seems as though it should be reportable because if he had no ground for -repping you initially (other then the fact that he was being a baby over the -rep you gave him) then its rep abuse. This is what Rui has been dealing with all week. This is one of the reasons why he's getting so pissed off about the rep abuse.

GPoints: 108,606 Rep Power: 28 | If someone revenge reps you, report it and make it clear to the mod you're reporting it to that it was just that...Revenge rep.
As far as flaming goes, I believe that -repping for it should be limited to you being reasonably offended by the post, or it being an obvious flame or attack towards you.
Otherwise, if it's something you think might even be questionable, don't -rep, just report it with your reason and let mods decide whether or not it's "Flaming" and deserves a warning or infraction.
The post you used as an example, I would personally consider "rude" but not flaming...In my opinion anyways. But, yes it might be considered flame baiting as he could have said it in a less controversial way.
But like I said, if it's questionable, just to avoid any controversy and to avoid making it look like you yourself are abusing -rep, save it for the posts that *really* warrant it, and if you're not sure, then report it and if it really is flaming or flame bating, then I think that the warning/infraction the user will receive is going to hurt slightly more than the little bit of -rep they received.
Anymore questions on this?

GPoints: 12,656 Rep Power: 12 | I have a question...
Why is +rep more significant than -rep? It would seem to me that people should be more-so aware of the bad egg in you than the good egg? For example, why can we +rep someone 5 points but only -rep them 2?
That doesn't really give an accurate summation of a person's character since -2 points won't affect the rep bar as much as +5 rep does.
Since -rep is for those occasions where you were REALLY bad, shouldn't it stand out more than positive rep? Shouldn't it be a larger penalty? Otherwise, what is to keep people from being jerks all the time? I know I would shape up quick if I was -repped DOUBLE the person's rep power for something instead of just HALF the person's rep power.
Just saying :o
Please and thank you for your responses all and powerful staff!
