Hash Lists - Neopets

How exactly do hash lists work? When I ask this, I mean how does one get the hashes and stuff? I'm not looking for a detailed explanation on how to get hashes or anything, I'm just wondering how they're obtained.

I ask this because it makes me wonder how people like featheralley, or petrewan, or charizard don't lose their accounts to hash lists or anything.

How exactly does a hash list work? I know the older accounts need a birthday to go along with the logging in but there is birthday cracking so I don't think that should be too much of an issue.

Yes, I would also like to know. I have searched for "How to lookup a website's md5 hash tables" bluntly, but I havent found anything. Is there something that comes at the end of the URL or am I going in the completely wrong direction? I know how to bruteforce with cain and abel, JTR, and Brutus, but the way Neopets is set up doesnt fall into any categories anywhere. I also have a dictionary of over 5 million passwords (thanks to the 4.9 million password list) but I still dont know just HOW to find an md5 hash list or table from a website. I will help any way I can along the way!

MD5 hashes come from databases. Usually from different neopets fansites, forums etc.

You see every website that you register on uses a database to store all the registration details, including your username, e-mail and an encrypted version of your password, that is mostly in a md5 hash format.

Now the hashes can be obtained illegally either by hacking the site database or simply downloading it if you own the site yourself. Please note that this is something that not just anyone can accomplish and is usually done by people who know what they are doing. This is also punishable by law.

The key to all this is that many people use the same password for their e-mails and other online accounts as they use in those sites/forums. This is how we can easily access neopets accounts if we get a hold of a database. All those famous neopets players probably know better not to use something simple as their passwords and not register with the same passwords on different sites.

That's a good hash cracker in case you're curious. It's the one I've always used.
