Nintendo came out after PS1 by two years which in essence means nothing, not only are they the same generation of gaming still PS1 was using Discs which even with there 32-bit system gave much greater results and turned producers such as Square-soft(now called Square-Enix due to a company merge) then N64's 62-bit system. So it was highly equal field that was left to producers to decide which they wanted to do, make games on the more expensive and less efficient cartridges or use cheaper more efficient discs.
Generations aren't so much defined by what year the system is released as which systems where competing at what time and the competing systems were PS1, N64, and eventualy Dreamcast which after that failure succesfuly withdrew Sega from the system creation side of gaming.
Though the same sort of thing with PS1 and N64 is now occurring with DS and PSP... stupid nintendo and inability to realize the superiority of the disk in 2007.

Kinda Offtopic: Marine There are no official plans for a psp2.
Sejiru The Ds actually uses cheep flashcarts for the games and is just as easy to program for and produce(and i think may be cheaper) as the psp's umd discs.

Overall nintendo kinda didn't have the upper hand I would've expected like when it was gameboy versus Gamegear (thats the correct name right?) and the gamegear was better but gameboy got better sales.

The xbox's games never seemed that great, and there's a greater selection for the playstations, especially since you can play the ps1 games on the ps2, and the ps1 AND ps2 games on the ps3. >w<

The Playstation is a great system with a great selection of games: God Of War, Tekken (Rock On!), Devil May Cry (until 4 anyway), and plenty of others that I'm too damn dumb to remember for some reason. The Xbox has plenty of good choices in its own right, like Gears Of War, Fable, Dead Rising, Quake IV, Halo, and others. I prefer to play games on both systems and that's how I'm standing in the console war.
